چکیده

The manifold role of aquatic macrophytes in lake ecology is closely linked to their distribution and biomass, which in turn is a synergy of various environmental factors. The implication of different environmental variables on macrophyte speciation and life form structure in lake Hiidenvesi, with an uneven eutrophication history, was studied. The persisting life forms refl ected the somewhat inherently turbid water: emergent and fl oating-leaved species were common, whereas submerged species were scarce and low-light tolerant dominated. Effects of uneven nutrient loading were noticeable amongst the interconnected basins of the lake: the shallow, northernmost basins are most turbid and eutrophic, and the steeper westerly basins are in turn less eutrophicated and more clear-water. Increased nutrient level and turbidity together with softening of bottom substrate have emphasized the speciation to more eutraphent species and pleustophytes, especially in the most eutrophic Kirkkojärvi basin.

Ecological status assessment of Skalenski Lakes (Bulgaria)

Over the past decade new ecological indices based on phytoplankton and macrophytes were developed as part of the tools for assessment of the ecological status of water bodies. This study demonstrates the applicability of two of them (Assemblage index /Q/ and Algae Group Index /AGI/) for evaluation of water bodies from a lake type L4 as well as their comparability. Assessment of the ecological s...

Condition of pH and ionic composition of water in a macrophyte dominated reservoir (Hanna Reservoir- Isfahan Province), Iran

2/3 of the reservoir surface area was approximately covered with dense populations of Myriophyllum, Ceratophyllum and Potamogeton species. The headwaters of the reservoir were considered as hard water and had both carbonatic and non-carbonatic hardness. When they were exposed to lentic condition of the reservoir and its intensive photosynthetic activities of macrophyte communities, the bicarbon...

Detritus Quality Controls Macrophyte Decomposition under Different Nutrient Concentrations in a Eutrophic Shallow Lake, North China

Macrophyte decomposition is important for carbon and nutrient cycling in lake ecosystems. Currently, little is known about how this process responds to detritus quality and water nutrient conditions in eutrophic shallow lakes in which incomplete decomposition of detritus accelerates the lake terrestrialization process. In this study, we investigated the effects of detritus quality and water nut...

Predicting Changes in Macrophyte Community Structure from Functional Traits in a Freshwater Lake: A Test of Maximum Entropy Model

Trait-based approaches have been widely applied to investigate how community dynamics respond to environmental gradients. In this study, we applied a series of maximum entropy (maxent) models incorporating functional traits to unravel the processes governing macrophyte community structure along water depth gradient in a freshwater lake. We sampled 42 plots and 1513 individual plants, and measur...
